You never know when an emergency will make itself known. Sometimes you can anticipate it, but in many cases, it hits you when you least expect it. However, just because you might not be able to see when an emergency hits, that doesn’t mean you can’t be prepared for one. And what better way to keep yourself prepared than with an emergency kit?

There are plenty of essentials to put into your emergency kit. Read on to find out what you may be missing.

Water

Water should always be the first thing that comes to mind when the topic of an emergency comes up. Unlike food, you can’t go very long without water, so it’s important to stock up on a few gallons just in case.

Flashlights

If your power goes out, you’re going to need an external source of light. Make sure to include more than one flashlight in your emergency kit, just in case one stops working. It’s also in your best interest to stock up on extra batteries as well.

First Aid Supplies

You never know what can happen during an emergency. For all you know, you or someone could get injured. In the event of an injury, it’s important that you have a first aid kit on hand. Make sure to include bandaids, gauze, anti-bacterial spray, a roll of cloth tape, a blanket, gloves, hydrogen peroxide and tweezers.

A Map

It’s crucial that you have at least two maps of your local area. In addition, you’ll also need a compass just in case you have to go somewhere on foot.

Extra Phone Chargers and Batteries

Your phone is going to play a pivotal role in an emergency. You’ll need it to get into contact with friends, family and emergency services. However, cell phones only stay on for a limited time until they’re recharged.
In order to keep your source of communication available, you’ll need to invest in a few extra chargers as well as an external battery.

Medication

If you or your family takes medication on a regular basis, you need to make sure you have an additional supply. In cases where roads are impassable, diabetics are at high risk of running out of insulin. Always make sure you have more than enough, regardless of medication.

Emergency situations are frightening, however, with advanced planning and prep, you can ensure that both you and your family are ready, no matter what happens.
