All security measures, whether it be guards, CCTV camera systems, or alarm systems, can be categorized as either passive or active security.
Passive security are those systems or processes which create a record of events, but do not actively interact or intervene in an ongoing event. An unmonitored surveillance system is a good example of a passive security measure. The cameras will record events, giving you a record after the fact, but they will not trigger emergency procedures or provide any kind of intervention.
In contrast, active security occurs when a system or process actively monitors activity in real-time and provides an appropriate response to events as they occur. A monitored surveillance system is a good example of an active security measure, as the surveillance officer is able to see activity on the premises and react appropriately to an incident as it occurs.
Passive security is most appropriate in low risk situations, where you simply need a record of activities. For example, you would like to know who is entering or exiting your property, but you do not want the expense of a concierge or full-time security officer. Installing a License Plate Reader camera will ensure you have an ongoing record of all vehicles entering and exiting your property. This record can be stored for any length of time you desire, depending on your storage capabilities and budget. However, should an incident occur, that camera will not trigger an alarm or respond in any way other than to record what occurs in view of the camera.
Active security is appropriate in any situation where you require an immediate response to activities or incidents. For example, an intruder enters your building after hours. You have a monitored surveillance system which triggers an alarm upon detecting motion. This alarm alerts your surveillance officer to the intrusion, allowing him/her to evaluate the activity and take appropriate action to address the situation immediately.
Both passive and active security measures can help you reduce liability and mitigate risks on your property. Making an informed decision on which measures to use can be the difference between an incident prevented and a costly or disruptive event on your property.
